When I bought this website, I had already made my plans, I had already made a list of the places I was going to visit, and it was destined to be today.I was born in the Yıldırım district of Bursa, I grew up here and I live here.Obviously, I love Yıldırım very much. The fact that it is my own neighborhood, the places where I spent my childhood, and most importantly, the 4th Ottoman Sultan Yildirim Bayezid Khan was located in this district and gave his name to the district is what impresses me the most.
When I took these photos, the weather was a little cold and a little overcast, it was raining lightly, but the love in me could not stop me and I will take photos for you and share what I know.
Yildirim Bayezid Khan is the 4th of the Ottoman Sultans, and he was given the nickname Yıldırım because of his speed in battles. He was also honored to be the father-in-law of Emir Sultan Hazretleri.
Let’s start to give information about Yildirim Bayezid Tomb, but let’s talk about one of the most common mistakes. In reality, the name of the mausoleum or the name of the sultan is Yıldırım Bayezid, but it is always referred to as Yıldırım Beyazıt on the internet. There is even such a situation on the Google Maps page of the mausoleum. So let’s know the correct one as Yildirim Bayezid Mausoleum, not Yildirim Beyazit Mausoleum.
Secondly, let’s come to the question of where Yildirim Bayezid Tomb is and how to get there.
As you can see Yildirim Bayezid Mausoleum, we put it as google maps and there are many alternatives for departure, if you want as an open address, this is the full address as Yildirim Mahallesi 3. Amaç Sokak No: 2 16350 Yıldırım / Bursa.
If you want directions to the mausoleum, as seen on the map, it is close to the metro stops, either get off at the Gökdere Metro stop, or get off at the Davutdede Metro stop, or if you come in front of Yıldırım Beyazıt High School, you can come up a steep road from there.
You can find historical information about Yildirim Bayezid Khan from encyclopedias or history sites, I think I will give information about his historical personality in the future, but for now I will give brief information.
Yildirim Bayezid Mausoleum is located above Yildirim Bayezid High School in the Yıldırım district of Bursa.
The mausoleum and the mosque are entered through the Cumle gate.
Unfortunately, like everywhere else, this historical monument has also been attacked by young people with character problems. There are situations that do not befit our culture and national heritage, such as spray-painted writings and song lyrics on the inner walls of the door.It is not important for the municipality to clean the paints, the important thing is to provide the necessary education to prevent these writings.Sad but true…
The mausoleum can be seen immediately after passing through the glass door.
The Yildirim Bayezid Mausoleum is heavily guarded by security, but it seems difficult to prevent drunks from drinking at night at the foot of the mosque’s minaret.
I would be grateful if someone could translate the inscriptions on the door.
Now that you know the inside and outside of the mausoleum from the pictures, it’s time for some encyclopedic information.
Sultan Bayezid I (Yıldırım) was the son of Sultan Murad I (Hüdavendigar) and Gülçiçek Hatun and was born in 1360 and died in 1403. He married Devlet Hatun, the daughter of Süleyman Şah, the Germiyan Bey, in 1381.
He was given the nickname “Yıldırım” due to his incredible speed and bravery in the campaign of his father Murad I against Alaeddin Ali Bey, the son of Karamanoğlu.
In 1389, Yıldırım Bayezid, who participated in the Battle of Kosovo I, became the sultan after his father was martyred in the battle. He maintained order in the Rumelia lands, ensured the unity of Anatolia. Yıldırım Bayezid, who built the Anatolian Fortress to take Istanbul, was captured by Timur in the Battle of Ankara on July 28, 1402. And he died in Akşehir on March 8, 1403.
The mausoleum was built by his son Süleyman Şah in 1406.
According to the inscriptions written in the introduction outside the tomb, when he died after being captured by Timur, he was first buried in the tomb of Sheikh Mahmud Hayrani and then brought to Bursa and buried where he is now located. The inscription on the door states that the architect of the tomb is Ali bin Hüseyin. It was damaged in the earthquake in 1855 and was repaired by Sultan Abdülaziz.
The main tomb has a square plan and the transition to the dome covering the space and rising on an octagonal pulley is provided with pointed trumpets and Turkish triangles.
Most of the mausoleum is decorated with pencil works, and in front of the entrance facade opening to the north, there is a portico with three domes carried by pointed arches resting on columns made of red porphyry stone.
Apart from Yıldırım Bayezid, there are his son İsa Çelebi on his right, his wife and two unknown cists at his feet. (In the tomb introduction outside, it says his wife, but as you will see in the photos I took, there is his other son Kasım.)
